It should not be confused with the later Voyah FREE+ or with the officially distributed global Voyah Free, which is a fully electric vehicle with a different battery, charging system and ownership package.
The 2025 Voyah Free 318 remains unusual among range-extended SUVs because its rear-wheel-drive version carries a 43 kWh battery and an official 318 km electric-range figure. The gasoline engine acts as a generator for longer journeys rather than replacing the need to charge the vehicle regularly.
The most important buying decision is not simply whether to select the higher trim. The RWD Touring maximizes electric distance and avoids the air-suspension system, while the AWD Explorer exchanges part of that range for much stronger acceleration, all-wheel drive and adjustable ride height.
The model year alone does not identify the vehicle
Voyah introduced the Free 318 in June 2024, but export databases and supplier listings often describe it as a 2025 vehicle. The same search results may now also contain the later Voyah FREE+, even though the two vehicles use different battery chemistry, dimensions, cockpit hardware and driver-assistance systems.
The global Voyah Free creates a second source of confusion. In markets with official Voyah distribution, the Free badge may refer to a fully electric all-wheel-drive SUV with a battery of more than 100 kWh and an official international driving range of about 500 km. That is not the 43 kWh range-extended Free 318 described here.
A buyer comparing quotations should therefore match the powertrain and battery before using the advertised year or model name. For this page, the defining identity is a 43 kWh range-extended vehicle with either a 200 kW rear motor or a 360 kW dual-motor system.
RWD Touring and AWD Explorer solve different problems
The RWD Touring is the version behind the “318” name. It combines a 200 kW rear motor with the longest official electric range in the pair. Its 7.6-second acceleration is modest beside the Explorer, but still appropriate for a large premium family SUV.
The AWD Explorer increases total output to 360 kW and reduces the 0–100 km/h time to about 4.5 seconds. It also adds height-adjustable air suspension, which allows the driver to lower the vehicle for faster road use or raise it when additional clearance is useful.
Those additions bring extra mass and energy consumption. The AWD version is officially rated at 259 km on electric power rather than 318 km, despite using the same 43 kWh battery.
For a buyer whose priority is daily electric commuting, lower mechanical complexity and a more conservative purchase price, the RWD Touring is the clearer choice. The AWD Explorer is better suited to drivers who will use its acceleration, traction and adjustable chassis rather than treating it as a conventional higher trim.
Use the 318 badge as a version identifier, not a distance promise
Owner reports help place the official figures in context. One rear-wheel-drive highway test in wet conditions produced approximately 221 km of electric driving, close to the more conservative 235 km international-cycle reference. An owner of the AWD Explorer reported roughly 200 to 230 km in warm urban use with air conditioning.
These are individual results rather than guarantees, but they show why the two versions should have different route expectations. Temperature, sustained motorway speed, cabin heating or cooling, elevation and payload will affect how early the range extender begins operating.
A practical planning baseline is therefore closer to the international-cycle figures of approximately 235 km for the RWD version and 190 km for the AWD version. The gasoline generator then provides continuity for longer travel, while regular charging preserves the quiet and lower-cost electric operation that makes the Free 318 attractive.
China-market software and the global Voyah Free follow different ownership paths
The Free 318 uses a China-market triple-screen cockpit and connected-service environment. Owner discussions include isolated reports of limited built-in applications and inconsistent Huawei HiCar reconnection. These reports do not establish a universal fault, but they show that the vehicle should remain useful even when Chinese online services are unavailable.
For an overseas buyer, the strongest reasons to select the China-market Free 318 are its range-extended powertrain, large battery, chassis and potential purchase-price advantage. Phone projection, remote control, online navigation and account-based services should be treated as secondary benefits unless their operation has been demonstrated in the intended phone and network environment.
The officially distributed global Voyah Free takes the opposite route. It is a fully electric vehicle with local-market charging hardware, a battery exceeding 100 kWh and support through an authorized regional network where available. It may be more suitable when official software, local charging compatibility and manufacturer-backed service are more important than gasoline-supported long-distance flexibility.
The correct comparison is therefore not simply China price versus overseas retail price. It is the China-market Free 318’s electric-first driving with fuel backup versus the global Free’s fully electric, locally supported ownership model.
